Preserving Workshop Series
Curious about what exactly we’ll be talking about? Here are some more detailed descriptions. Just remember these workshops are about answering your questions and providing whatever information you need to feel confident applying these skills at home. Either bring your questions to the workshops or email me ahead of time.
The timing for these workshops is perfect, you’ll get the skills and confidence you need early in the season before it’s too late. That means, you’ll have plenty of time to plan a preserving party with your friends and collect the freshest and best produce you can get your hands on. Hey, maybe this is the year you actually make jam or put up some garden veggies!
Food Storage 101 – How to store food and reduce food waste
Learn to store food properly to make it last longer, retain highest flavor and nutrient content, reduce food waste and save money. This workshop will provide practical tips and ideas to help you keep common foods fresh and tasty as long as possible. You’ll learn what Best Before Dates really mean, what to keep on the counter or fridge, what foods shouldn’t be stored next to each other and which foods can or cannot go in the freezer. Bring your food storage questions and the oldest can of food in your pantry – we’ll look at various resources to help determine if you should use it or lose it.

Using and Preserving Garden Herbs
Whether growing in a forgotten corner of your garden or in a container on your patio, learn how to make the most of your herbs this year. In this workshop, we’ll explore favorite Manitoba garden herbs and learn how to prune, harvest, dry, freeze, store and use those herbs. We’ll even make homemade herbal teas and seasoning blends for you to sample. Be prepared for a lot of scratch ‘n sniff in this workshop.

Jam Making 101 – Let’s Get Jammin’
Fresh, local fruit will soon be at its peak. Learn everything you need to know to confidently and safely make delicious jams. It’s easier than you think and doesn’t require a whole lot of fancy equipment. In this hands-on workshop you’ll be making strawberry jam as we cover sterilizing jars, pectin varieties, water bath canning, safe storage and favorite recipe sources. This is going to be tasty!

Blanching and Freezing Produce
Get the most out of fresh seasonal fruits and veggies by learning how to freeze them and maintain optimum quality. In this hands-on workshop you’ll be at the cook-top learning how to blanch and freeze fresh produce. We’ll cover the golden rules of freezing and thawing food, how to avoid crystal build up, how to remove air without a vacuum sealer and tips for freezing berries, herbs, leftovers and garden fresh veggies.

Hot Water Bath Canning 101- Let’s Get Canning!
Hot water bath canning is an easy, safe way of preserving fruits, tomatoes and pickled veggies. In this hands-on workshop you’ll be making a batch of dilly beans and learn everything you need to know about hot water bath canning including sterilizing, processing times, safe storage, favorite recipe sources and what foods are not safe to can with this method. You’ve heard so many stories – it’s time to discover just how easy it is.
