Summertime is a time to enjoy the bounty of fresh, local fruits and veggies. No matter where you are, take advantage of what local growers have to offer.

To extend the season, consider freezing, jamming, pickling or canning some of the season’s bounty. You’ll be grateful for it this winter Follow the links in the food storage chart for ideas and instructions on how to can, freeze, pickle, jam or even dehydrate seasonal produce.

If you’re headed to the lake or other scenic destinations, whether it’s at a cottage, a campground or the backcountry – enjoy and play safe! And remember safe food handling practices become even more important during hot weather.

Supplement this list with frozen and canned fruits and veggies to keep costs down. Of course, you can add whatever fresh produce you’d like. I often add other fresh produce that comes from as close to home as possible. For example there are more local greenhouses that sustainably grow tomatoes, sweet peppers, cucumbers, fresh herbs, lettuce and micro-greens. And, on special occasions, I also reach for exotic fruits and veggies from around the world. What a treat!

How to Store August Fruits & Vegetables

  • August 8 is National Sneak Some Zucchini Onto Your Neighbor’s Porch Day. Wait until dusk and place a zucchini or two on your neighbours door step for them to discover. 
  • To get the juiciest corn cobs that aren’t under or overripe, pick the medium sized ones that feel the heaviest and that have silk that is still somewhat green.
  • Be food safe in the heat! Serve food in small batches kept on top of ice. When you need more, bring out a fresh new batch stored in the fridge until needed. Read more summertime food tips.
  • Cold temperatures (like your fridge) turns watermelons, stone fruit and tomatoes gritty and flavourless. Only place them in the fridge for 2-3 days only when they’re fully ripe.
  • Packing eggs on a camping trip? Instead of taking a precarious carton of eggs, crack and beat eggs at home and transfer to well sealed plastic container. One beaten egg is about 3 Tbsp, one cup of beaten eggs is the equivalent of about 5 large eggs. No fuss, no mess!
  • Too many hot peppers? String them up to dry using a needle and thread or chop and freeze without blanching.
