If you’re hosting a big dinner, check out our Guide to Hosting A Big Dinner for plenty of tid bits on timing, portion sizes and ideas for what to make.

‘Tis the season of eating!

Enjoy.

  • Find the freshest tasting produce
  • Get the most affordable produce
  • Reduce your environmental footprint
  • Get instant variety by eating seasonally

Use this list for meal planning and making grocery lists.

Supplement this list with frozen and canned fruits and veggies to keep costs down. Of course, you can add whatever fresh produce you’d like. I often add other fresh produce that comes from as close to home as possible. For example there are more local greenhouses that sustainably grow tomatoes, sweet peppers, cucumbers, fresh herbs, lettuce and micro-greens. And, on special occasions, I also reach for exotic fruits and veggies from around the world. What a treat!

Helpful Tips

How to Store December Fruits & Vegetables

  • When selecting cauliflower, look for compact white heads that are not separating and do not have any brown spots.
  • Easy peeling mandarin orange production has exploded around the world and are now available year-round. But, you’ll still find classic mandarin boxes this season. Store the boxes in a cool dark place or move the mandarins to the low humidity crisper drawer in your fridge.
  • Cut cabbage may develop gray/black edges; as long as it’s not fuzzy or slimy, it’s safe to remove those edges and eat the inner parts.
  • Store ready to eat, chopped carrots in water to keep them fresh and crisp. Replace the water every 2-3 days. The small nutrient loss is worth having tasty, convenient snacks to go.
  • Sweet potatoes do not like the cold! Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place. The fridge will create a hard center and off flavour.
  • Thanks to greenhouse production, cucumbers are available year-round, but don’t expect them to last more than a week! Even when stored correctly (tightly wrapped in original plastic wrap or wrapped in paper towel in plastic bag) in the fridge. Buy accordingly!
