One more month of enjoying root veggies and citrus. After this, expect our seasonal fruits and veggies to change quite a bit.

So, dig in! There’s some great tasting recipes and some helpful tips if you want to preserve or freeze some of this produce for when it’s harder to find in the grocery store.

Supplement this list with frozen and canned fruits and veggies. And of course, you can add other fresh produce. I often pick other fresh produce that comes from as close to home as possible. For example there are more local greenhouses sustainably growing tomatoes, sweet peppers, cucumbers, fresh herbs, lettuce and micro-greens. Those make great additions to the winter veggies. And, on special occasions, I also reach for exotic fruits and veggies from around the world.

Helpful Tips

How to Store March Fruits & Vegetables

  • Fresh pineapple will not ripen after being harvested. Ripe pineapples smell sweet and fruity, are more yellow than green and are firm with a slight give when squeezed.
  • Store cut carrot and celery sticks in water in the fridge. You’ll lose a little vitamin C, but it makes for tasty, crunchy, convenient snacks. Read more in How to Store Fruits and Veggies.
  • When sealing or resealing food in the freezer, always remove as much air as possible and seal tightly to prevent ice crystals and freezer burn.
  • Refresh slightly wilted lettuce by soaking in ice cold water for 10 to 20 minutes. Pat dry and enjoy.
  • Store herbs like cilantro, parsley, mint, rosemary, dill, etc. by laying in single layer on slightly damp towel, roll up and keep in plastic bag in fridge.
  • If a whole cabbage is too much for you, ask the grocer to cut it in half. Wrap the exposed side tightly in plastic wrap. Cut away a thin slice to remove any discoloration.
