What’s in season?

July

Fruits & Vegetables

Make the most of this season of fresh fruit and veggies. Visit a farmer’s market, seasonal shop or U-pick farm and get the full experience of fresh, local, seasonal food. There’s nothing better!

But pace yourself! All the berries and fresh produce looks so amazing, you’ll want to buy it all – but remember that these fresh berries, fruits and veggies have a relatively short shelf life. Only buy what you have a plan for.

Speaking of plans, will you be freezing, jamming, pickling or canning any of the season’s fruits and veggies?

Follow the links in the storage chart to give you some inspiration. Enjoy all the glorious July foods!

  • Find the freshest tasting produce
  • Get the most affordable produce
  • Reduce your environmental footprint
  • Get instant variety by eating seasonally

Use this list for meal planning and making grocery lists.

Supplement this list with frozen and canned fruits and veggies to keep costs down. Of course, you can add whatever fresh produce you’d like. I often add other fresh produce that comes from as close to home as possible. For example there are more local greenhouses that sustainably grow tomatoes, sweet peppers, cucumbers, fresh herbs, lettuce and micro-greens. And, on special occasions, I also reach for exotic fruits and veggies from around the world. What a treat!

Helpful Tips

How to Store July Fruits & Vegetables

  • Soaking fresh berries in a vinegar bath (1 part white vinegar to 3 parts water), draining and drying them well before storing in a container lined with a towel can improve storage time a few days.
  • Stone fruit like apricots, peaches, plums and nectarines will turn mealy when stored in the fridge, especially if they are firm and not quite fully ripe. Keep them on the counter. Once they’re fully ripe you can store them in the fridge for just a couple of days.
  • Wash most fruits and veggies just before using, not before storing. Washing removes the natural coating present on most produce and added moisture can cause mold.
  • Mushrooms and zucchini should be kept in paper bags instead of plastic to avoid trapping moisture, which can lead to slimy veggies real quick.
  • Strong light, especially direct sunlight causes produce to spoil faster.
  • Vegetables with a high water content like cucumbers and lettuce do not freeze well.
