I’ve started a list of places and ways to get fresh locally produced food here in Winnipeg. It’s a good start, but I know I’m missing some places, so please let me know other places or resources to add to the list.

Delicious fresh food is waiting – go get some!

Farmers’ Markets

Super fresh food at your fingertips. I remember when my mom had a stall at the Brandon Farmers’ Market. We were up at  5am to pick, wash and sort through the produce to make sure customers got amazing fresh food. That’s still how it’s done today by all those standing behind the table. I’m thankful for their work and really enjoy being one of the shoppers now!

You’ve likely heard of the St. Norbert Farmers’ Market – a Saturday morning institution for many. But did you know you can visit there Wednesdays from 11 am to 3 pm too? And did you know there are tons of smaller, neighbourhood markets all over the city. I bet you can find a market every day of the week!

Delivery Options

Just when you thought it couldn’t get any easier! Order online and get your farm fresh food delivered to your doorstep with these options.

Fresh Option Organic Delivery – Mantioba’s first organic fresh food box and delivery service

Harvest Moon Local Food Initiative  – monthly orders from several farmers who deliver to set points in Winnipeg.

Retail Locations

Here in Winnipeg, we’re lucky to have a number of great retail outlets that offer farm fresh food. These retailers know their producers and know their food. Yes, you may pay a little extra, but you’ll get amazing flavor and great food. Oh you’ll also be benefiting the local economy.

Crampton’s Market

Jardin St. Leon Garden

Vic’s Fruit Market

Local Meats and Frozen Treats

National Grocery Store Chains – Look for signs that show which food items are locally grown or produced. Here in Manitoba the Co-Op grocery stores seem to be more open to carry food items produced by small scale producers.

U-Pick Farms

There’s something special about going to the farm and picking fresh produce yourself. Strawberries are well known for U-Pick, but you can get saskatoons, cherries and other produce too.

Community Supported Agricutlure – CSA Box Programs

Get a variety of seasonal fresh food every week, two weeks or every month with a CSA Box. Community Supported Agriculture is a partnership between consumers and farmers, with consumers paying a lump sum upfront, and farmers delivering a weekly or biweekly bin of a fairly broad mix of food products throughout the harvest season. You’re bound to discover some new veggies, learn new recipes and gain a whole new appreciation for seasonal eating.

Farm Direct

Go for a drive and visit a farm to buy direct from the farmer. A great way to see the province, learn about agriculture and get great food!

Check out this list for the many farmers that sell direct. You may be surprised at what you can get!

    1. Thanks Lisa! It’s nice to have a listing in one place. I love that people are adding more places in the comments too!

  1. Missing from retail stores carrying local foods:
    Bouchee/Boucher
    Humbolt’s Legacy (I think?)
    Organic Planet Worker Co-op
    The Fresh Carrot

    1. There’s also

      – Tallgrass Prairie (Wolseley and The Forks) (bread, cold pressed local sunflower oil)
      – Gimli Fish (Manitoba-caught whitefish source)
      – andmore that I can’t think of right now!

    2. Fantastic, thanks for adding to the list Teresa.
Just a note St. Vital Market is no longer in business.
