What’s in season?

February Fruits & Vegetables

Root veggies and citrus are still topping the charts this month. No problem – we’ve got plenty of tasty recipes and ideas for these affordable and nutritious fruits and veggies.

  • Find the freshest tasting produce
  • Get the most affordable produce
  • Reduce your environmental footprint
  • Get instant variety by eating seasonally

Use this list for meal planning and making grocery lists.

Supplement this list with frozen and canned fruits and veggies. And of course, you can add other fresh produce. I often pick other fresh produce that comes from as close to home as possible. For example there are more local greenhouses sustainably growing tomatoes, sweet peppers, cucumbers, fresh herbs, lettuce and micro-greens. Those make great additions to the winter veggies. And, on special occasions, I also reach for exotic fruits and veggies from around the world.

Helpful Tips

How to Store February Fruits & Vegetables

  • Onions do not like to be stored in the fridge. They prefer cool, dark and dry spaces away from potatoes.
  • Did you know fruits and veggies have natural coatings to lock in moisture. That’s why it’s best to wash produce just before eating.
  • The enemies of freshness are AIR, TEMPERATURE, MOISTURE and LIGHT. When you can control these effectively, you’re produce will last longer.
  • Use your crisper drawers to your advantage. Keep a high humidity drawer (vent closed) for produce that wilts easily and a low humidity drawer (vent open) for produce that rots easily. Read more in How to Store Fruits and Veggies.
  • Most fruit will last longer if stored in the fridge. Keep some in the fruit basket to encourage healthy snacking, but keep the extras in the fridge.
  • Buying in bulk is only a bargain if you can use the food before it spoils. No matter how diligent you are, fresh produce does have a limited shelf life. Don’t buy it if you can’t use it.
