Savoury Cottage Cheese with Herbs
This savory cottage cheese loaded with fresh spring herbs is how I grew up eating cottage cheese. It’s still one of my favourites every spring.

Before we moved to Canada from Germany, we made this using Quark, is a smoother, tangier cousin of cottage cheese very common in Germany, but hard to get here in Canada. We subbed in cottage cheese and have been making this every spring since. We used to call it Frühlings Quark – or Spring Cottage Cheese. To this day, I still prefer topping cottage cheese with savoury ingredients instead of fruit or sweet things.
There’s not much to the recipe – mix cottage cheese with a combination of herbs and season with salt and pepper and maybe a bit of caraway if you have the German farmer spirit in you!😘
Which Herbs to Use
The classic herb combination that my mom always used was
- parsley
- dill
- chives
That doesn’t mean you can’t use other herbs like:
- chervil
- mint
- basil
- garlic chives
- tarragon
- thyme
- oregano
How to Serve Savoury Cottage Cheese
Put it on Toast
- Use a hardy, dense bread like whole grain, pumpernickel, sourdough, etc.
- Top with:
- fresh sliced veggies like tomatoes, radishes, cucumbers, avocado – whatever’s in season
- spicy greens like arugula/rocket, pea shoots or other sprouts, dandelion greens, etc.
- smoked salmon, prosciutto, fried egg
Use as an Appetizer
Make mini versions of the toast ideas above – just put them on sturdy crackers or mini pumpernickel bread squares
Use as a Dip
Serve with veggies and breads that can hold the curds.
Serve with Potatoes
Whenever we made this spread for our lunchtime toast, we’d make extra to put beside our evening potatoes whether they were boiled, fried, roasted or baked. It’s especially tasty with new baby potatoes.
